How to buy crypto in Brazil (BRL)

The cheapest and most common way to buy crypto in Brazil is a PIX bank transfer into a domestic exchange — instant, 24/7 and the lowest-fee rail, with PIX-to-USDT on Mercado Bitcoin, Binance or Bitso as the standard route. The tax trap most buyers miss is that Receita Federal treats every crypto-to-crypto swap as a taxable disposal, so gains are taxable even if you never cash out to reais.

KYC requirements

CPF (validated) + photo ID (RG, CIN, CNH, or passport) + residential address

CPF is the foundational identity check; higher-risk users need source-of-funds.

Payment rails

  • PIX — 0.12% (Onramp.money) · up to 2.90% (Ramp) · instant, 24/7

Stablecoins — which one works here

  • USDT: Dominant — 88.7% of stablecoin volume
  • USDC: 7.1% of volume

BRZ (BRL-pegged) = 3.4%. BCB Res 561 (Oct 2026) restricts stablecoin cross-border eFX.

Tax

15% to 22.5% progressive on gains; exempt below R$35,000/month

DeCripto (IN 2.291/2025) mandatory July 2026; offshore exchanges (Binance) = no exemption, flat 15%.

Bank account risk

Lower than Nigeria/India — no broad bank ban. Keep PIX records; DeCripto reporting applies from July 2026.

How to cash out

  • PIX (exchange) — 0.12–0.15% · instant BRL withdrawal
  • Banxa PIX — fee at checkout · two-way buy/sell

Exchange rate premium

Moderate; stablecoins track the parallel rate (no extreme premium post-2025)

Crypto ATMs: A few dozen — not practical vs PIX.

Security

Use BCB-authorised VASPs. DeCripto non-filing penalties apply from July 2026 (R$100+/month).

FAQ

Is crypto legal in Brazil?

Yes, and regulated. BCB Resolutions 519/520/521 license VASPs from Feb 2026.

What is the crypto tax in Brazil?

Capital gains taxed 15–22.5%; exempt below R$35,000/month on domestic exchanges. Offshore exchanges have no exemption (flat 15%).

Which stablecoin is used in Brazil?

USDT dominates (88.7% of stablecoin volume), then USDC and the BRL-pegged BRZ.

What is DeCripto?

Brazil’s crypto-asset declaration (IN 2.291/2025), mandatory from July 2026, aligned with the OECD CARF standard.

What PIX limits apply when buying crypto in Brazil?

The BCB caps nighttime PIX transfers to a different individual at R$1,000 between 20:00 and 06:00, but an exchange deposit is not caught by that cap because the receiving exchange is a legal entity — the applicable ceiling is your bank’s TED-equivalent PIX limit (IN BCB 512/2024, updated by IN BCB 669/2025). You can raise your limits in your bank’s app, but under BCB rules the increase only takes effect after a waiting period of at least 24 hours.

Do I pay tax when I swap one crypto for another in Brazil?

Yes — Receita Federal treats a crypto-to-crypto swap as a disposal (alienação), so exchanging BTC for ETH or for a stablecoin is a taxable event valued at the BRL market rate on the swap date, even if you never convert back to reais. Each swap also counts toward the R$35,000 monthly sales total that determines whether the exemption applies.

Should I use a BCB-authorised exchange or an offshore one?

Brazil’s VASP regime (BCB Resolutions 519/520/521) took effect on 2 February 2026: domestic providers already operating had until 30 October 2026 to file for authorisation, and from that date BCB-authorised institutions are barred from dealing with unauthorised counterparties, so unlicensed platforms lose access to bank accounts, PIX and settlement. The reporting burden differs too — Brazilian exchanges file your trades with Receita automatically, while foreign-exchange, DEX and P2P volume above R$35,000/month must be self-declared monthly through DeCripto from 1 July 2026.
